Black Friday traces its origins back to the 1950s in the United States. The term “Black Friday” was first used by the Philadelphia Police Department to describe the heavy traffic and crowds that descended upon the city the day after Thanksgiving. This was long before it became the nationwide shopping event we know today. In fact, the term had a negative connotation, associated with overcrowded streets and potential for accidents.
However, by the 1980s, the phrase began to take on a more positive meaning in retail circles. Retailers, traditionally operating in the red (i.e., losing money) for much of the year, saw Black Friday as the day when their books would finally go “into the black” (i.e., turn a profit). The idea of steep discounts, long lines, and sales events became a way for stores to draw in large crowds and generate big sales to close out the year.
